The LA Dragons finished the metro season competition on a high note this past Saturday, defeating the Arizona Hawks by a score of 8.13.61 to 6.6.42.
Hosting the visitors on another picturesque SoCal day, the Dragons managed to get out to a good start based on a strong performance from the midfield. Cranking up their defensive pressure, the boys from LA kept the Hawks on their toes throughout the contest. Lukas Golson, Freddy Schulin and Joe Silvio used their experience and toughness to their advantage in a scrappy first half.
In the second half, the Hawks were able to use the footy better in the midfield and keep the margin slim. But the Dragons inevitably responded with some fundamentally sound passages of play, allowing them to hold the lead. Dre Jansen, Pete Momjian, and Trevor Osterholm also applied more pressure to an athletic Hawk forward line. Despite the Hawks making it a very physical game, LA’s defense stayed firm and secured the win in the process.
Additionally, the Dragons women had their first full match of the season, hosting the Hawks women in what turned out to be a hard-fought encounter. While the Dragons started off with a promising first half, they couldn’t keep the momentum going and lost by a score of 6.9.45 to 4.2.26. Still, it was a competitive first effort and there are a lot of positive things for them to build on heading into the rest of the season.
The Dragons will have a bye over Independence Day weekend before the beginning of 18-a-side play. They will return to San Diego for Round 1 of the SoCal Cup on July 14.
